The Redcliffe KiteFest is taking to the skies once again – but this year, it’s doing things a little differently.

With a focus on simplicity, this year’s festival, which takes place at Pelican Park on the weekend of Saturday, 20 September and Sunday, 21 September, promises to scale things back so it’s all about kites and the community.

CEO of Visit Moreton Bay, Luke Edwards, said that this year marked a fresh chapter for KiteFest.

“We’ve brought the focus right back to what made this event iconic in the first place: the incredible spectacle in the sky,” he said. “It’s a return to simplicity, with a completely free event that puts the kites and community front and centre.”

What to Expect at KiteFest

With no entry fee and a family-friendly vibe, Luke said the new approach was a deliberate move.

“We wanted to give families a chance to experience KiteFest as a relaxed, inclusive day out,” he said.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive. People are excited to get back to the heart of the festival – watching those incredible kites take flight.”

What’s more, there will also be demonstrations by expert kite flyers from around the world.

“You can expect to see some of the world’s largest and most creative kites – from giant inflatables to intricate designs that celebrate culture and artistry,” Luke said.

“With Vietjet back onboard as naming rights sponsor, we’ll also see a nod to Vietnamese kite flying traditions.”

For little ones, there will be plenty of space to run and play, plus a dedicated kite-making workshop and a public fly zone for testing out their own creations.

Families are encouraged to get involved in the fun early by crafting their own kites at home and bringing them along. There will be a small selection of food trucks on site, but the vibe is very much picnic-friendly.

“There’ll be a handful of quality food trucks, but we’re encouraging people to bring a picnic rug and settle in,” Luke said. “It’s about ease and comfort – a chance to enjoy the event your way.”

The stripped-back event is all about lifting spirits and flying free.

“Whether you’re a seasoned flyer or giving it a go for the first time, KiteFest is for everyone,” Luke said.
