Most people fear public speaking more than they fear death. As Jerry Seinfeld famously explained it, “That means most people at a funeral would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy!”

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Confidence in speaking is a skill that can be learnt, and organisations such as Toastmasters can make it fun and easy.

100 years ago, Dr Ralph Smedley started Toastmasters International to help his business associates speak with confidence and clarity. To celebrate 100 years, and millions of people learning to communicate more effectively, Redcliffe Toastmasters are offering an Art of Public Speaking workshop to anyone seeking to improve this valuable skill.

Di Riddell, Confidence Mentor and presenter of the workshop, said she joined Toastmasters 47 years ago at a low time in her life and has never looked back.

“Toastmasters helped me move from a state of social anxiety to confidence as a speaker, communicator and leader,” Di said. “It also led me to become an author, inspirational speaker and confidence coach.

“The skills learned are life skills and can benefit anyone in every area of life.”

Confidence is the key to living as your best self. Benefits include higher self-esteem, enhanced communication skills, better relationships, career advancement and very importantly – having your voice heard.

Confidence is that extraordinary energy that is attractive, strong, vibrant and engaging,” Di said. “When you see it, you know it and you want it.

“Never has finding and owning your voice been more important to living your best life. We seek authenticity and connection, which we achieve through confident expression.

“As I gained communication skills, leadership skills developed and were noticed. I was encouraged to step into leadership roles that enabled me to serve in my community, speak and MC at functions and judge speaking contests.

“It all began with learning confident communication.”

Redcliffe Toastmasters’ Art of Public Speaking workshop can help you speak with confidence. Workshop costs $50, which includes a light lunch.

Places are limited. Phone Di on 0409 638 248 or search ‘The Art of Public Speaking Workshop’ on Facebook for details and to book.
