Aloe Summer! – Healthy Drinks to Keep You Cool and Well

It’s probably the most valuable, yet the most under-utilised plant in your garden.

Aloe vera is easy to grow and well-known for its ability to soothe burns, but did you know aloe vera brings those same healing properties to the rest of your body?

Local author of Cookin’ for Cures, a cookbook featuring over 100 aloe vera-based recipes, Angie Andrews said drinking aloe vera juice regularly was a simple and natural way to stay much healthier.

“Aloe vera contains over 100 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and vital enzymes that help repair and maintain the body’s healthy cells while rejecting harmful cells,” Angie said.

“This strengthens our immune system and assists in the healing of many diseases and ailments, including arthritis, diabetes, skin conditions and cold sores, to name just a few.

“Aloe vera has also been known to support those going through chemotherapy by reducing the side effects.”

When purchasing aloe vera plants for consumption, it is vital to ascertain that they are of the barbadensis variety and at least two years old. Put them in full sun and water weekly for maximum gel.

Angie’s top tips for preparation are to cut mature leaves at least 23cm long, wash thoroughly to remove yellow sap, trim sides and slice the top off with a sharp knife, then scrape the gel off the leaf.

“Most of the goodness in the gel lasts for about two hours, so use it straightaway or freeze as ice cubes,” Angie said.

“Aloe has no flavour and blends well with juices and smoothies and other food. It helps keep you hydrated as well as healthy.”

Try these delicious recipes from Cookin’ for a Cure:

Pine-Melon Crush

  • 2 slices pineapple
  • 1 apple (cored and sliced)
  • 2 slices watermelon
  • 1 mango (peeled and sectioned)
  • 1 aloe vera leaf (gel)

Place all ingredients in a juicer and blend. Add ice cubes to serve.

Great for general health and lowers cholesterol.

Ban-Mango Smoothie

  • 1 banana
  • 1 mango (peeled and sectioned)
  • 1 cup vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 aloe vera leaf (gel)

Place all ingredients into a blender along with crushed ice. Blend and serve.

Helps remove body fats.
