Tucked between Bee Gees Way and Cominos Arcade at 128 Sutton Street, Textile Connections has quietly become one of Redcliffe’s most interesting creative spaces. Recently celebrating its first birthday, the shop is part of a small but noticeable shift that has reinvigorated this end of Sutton Street, with several businesses relocating down from Anzac Avenue and bringing new life to the precinct.

For locals who haven’t yet discovered it, Textile Connections is not your typical fabric store. It’s a fabric rescue and haberdashery shop, built around the idea of keeping quality textiles in circulation and out of landfill. The result is a space filled with variety, surprise and genuine care for both craft and community.

A Different Kind of Fabric Store

Textile Connections rescues fabrics from designers, collectors, marketplaces and long-forgotten stashes, giving them a second life in the hands of local makers. Stock ranges from quilting cottons and apparel fabrics through to woollen suiting, shirting, costume fabrics, upholstery and even UV-rated swimwear materials.

No two visits are quite the same. The shop includes pure wool and cashmere suiting, a wide range of shirting materials (some of which was sourced through a designer contact in Melbourne), and an impressive selection of lycras. These range from lingerie-weight bamboo to evening lycras and specialised UV-rated rashie fabric. There’s even a small but eye-catching collection of crocodile and snake vinyls alongside mermaid spandex.

It’s the kind of place where creativity is sparked simply by browsing.

The Essentials You Actually Need

Fabric at Textile Connections

While the rescued fabrics are what draw people in, many locals are delighted to find that Textile Connections also stocks the essentials that make projects possible.

Shelves are well stocked with sewing threads, interfacings and supports, quilting padding, pins and needles, ribbons and trims. There’s lace, cushion piping, metallic threads and fringing, alongside a wide range of elastic widths. Elastic has unexpectedly become the shop’s best-selling item, with four widths available in black or white.

Cotton thread is purchased new to ensure reliability, while zips and buttons are rescued wherever possible. Vintage buttons, in particular, are a favourite among regulars.

The approach is practical, thoughtful and refreshingly honest. Textile Connections may not have everything you’re looking for, but when they do, it’s likely to be something special.

A Shop Built on Service and Connection

What truly sets Textile Connections apart is the customer service. Locals speak warmly about the help they receive, whether it’s getting a project started, tracking down a finishing detail, or simply talking through ideas.

There’s a genuine joy in helping people tick things off their list. Recently, a customer came in searching for a single black toggle for her granddaughter’s school hat. Among a tube full of yellow toggles was just one black one that fit the brief perfectly. Another project finished. Another small win for a local family.

This kind of care has helped Textile Connections build a strong base of regular customers, alongside walk-ins, fashion students and designers who are gradually discovering the store.

Saving Fabric From Landfill

Vinyl plus

At its heart, Textile Connections is about sustainability in a very practical sense. The shop actively encourages locals to bring in unwanted fabric or inherited stashes they no longer know what to do with. Instead of being discarded, these materials can be passed on to someone who will use and value them.

It’s a simple idea with a big impact. By keeping fabric in circulation, Textile Connections supports local creativity, reduces waste and helps keep sewing skills alive in the community.

Locals have embraced this purpose, with many expressing how much they value having a business that aligns with their desire to shop more consciously.

Worth the Detour Down Sutton Street

If you sew, quilt, craft or design, Textile Connections is well worth a visit. Even if you don’t have a project in mind, it’s the kind of shop that sparks ideas and reminds you what’s possible when quality materials are given a second chance.

And if they don’t have exactly what you need, chances are they’ll be able to point you in the right direction, right here in Redcliffe.
