Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association’s Blue Day event is encouraging the community to start important conversations about men’s health, beginning with checking in with a mate.
The association will host a fundraising event on Saturday, 21 November, to raise money for Movember and Beyond Blue, supporting men’s physical and mental health.
Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association event coordinator Cass Moylan said stigma often makes it harder for men to ask for help.
“We know how difficult asking for help is, especially for men, where stigma often makes speaking up even harder,” Cass said. “Blue Day gives us a unique opportunity to start those conversations among mates, away from the pressures of home and work, in an environment where people feel comfortable and supported.”
Throughout the day, teams will take to blue softball diamonds, with merchandise, raffles and fundraising activities raising money for both charities.
Cass said sport created a natural setting for those conversations.
“Sport gives people a common interest and a reason to spend time together,” she said. “Whether it’s sitting in the dugout, having a chat after a game or catching up with teammates over a drink, there are plenty of opportunities for conversations to happen naturally.”
Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $1,000 for each charity, with clubs running their own fundraising promotions to support the cause.
Sports Field Conversations and Overcoming Facility Challenges
Cass said the association’s grounds were undergoing major renovations ahead of the 2027 Women’s Softball World Cup, but that would not stop Blue Day from going ahead.
“It’s an incredibly exciting time for our association, but it also means we’re operating with reduced facilities and limited diamond availability this season,” she said. “As a result, Blue Day will be a little smaller than last year, but the renovations certainly won’t stop us from getting behind such an important cause!”
Local businesses can also get involved, with financial contributions or donated products and services for the day’s fundraising raffles.
“Every contribution, big or small, helps us raise funds, spread awareness and make the day a success,” Cass said.
Above all, Cass said Blue Day came back to looking out for the people around you.
“Blue Day is a reminder that there are things far more important than the final score,” she said.
