This National Recycling Week, local families are being encouraged to rethink their recycling habits and discover how everyday drink containers can support community causes.

Running from 9-15 November, the week provides an opportunity to learn more about recycling through Queensland’s Containers for Change scheme, which offers a 10-cent refund for eligible containers.

Express Recycling business development manager Nikki Mullen said one of the most common mistakes was throwing eligible containers into household recycling or general waste.

“One of the biggest things we see is people simply not realising how many of the drink containers they use every day are worth 10 cents,” Nikki said.

She encouraged families to keep a dedicated bin or bag at home and involve children in collecting containers, setting savings goals and watching their refunds add up.

Refunds can also support local schools, sporting clubs and charities by using a registered organisation’s Containers for Change member number when returning containers.

“It’s such a simple form of fundraising because you’re not necessarily asking people to put their hand in their pocket, you’re turning something they already have at home into money for a cause they care about,” Nikki said.

To check container eligibility, visit Containers for Change or use the Containers for Change QLD app.
