At a time when we are facing great challenges to a fragile world democracy. Scarborough-based historian and author Bryn Evans has taken us back to a time some eighty years ago, when a similar situation existed, with his new book Escape, Survive or Die.
Not only is the launch of this book appropriately timed, but it is a good read as well. The 240-page, hard-covered book is filled with more than fifty inspirational true life stories, told by ordinary people who experienced extraordinary happenings in their lives during World War Two.
In three words, the book’s title encapsulates the tales of the featured storytellers, who relate unbelievably dramatic accounts of their amazing lives. Their adventurous escapades happened against a multitude of backdrops, including air, sea, desert, jungle and mountain ranges, among others.
Queenslanders feature in these stories as well – one, the naval officer father of Redcliffe resident Diane Capewell.

The World According to Kate: A Humorous Look at Everyday Life
It’s not often that I am given the chance to review two books by the same author within a couple of months of each. However, some authors are wonderfully prolific and the ideas and words just form and tumble out into books with exciting regularity. Katy More is one of these. This 47-year-old Moreton Bay resident, mother, author, editor and columnist has produced her second book, which promises to be as thought-provoking as her first, which was a revealing expose of bipolar disorder, entitled Consistently Inconsistent.

However, her new 95-page e-book is far from the first book’s subject matter. The World According to Kate: The Candid Thoughts of an Ordinary Housewife consists of 31 previously published newspaper articles covering a wide variety of subjects – everything from bad drivers, camping, ‘60 km couch potato, ‘The Man Code’ to the intriguingly titled ‘Mummy Mafia’!
She has an open writing style, which is easy to read and will generate quite a few chuckles. A good book to have at your bedside on those predicted wearisome hot summer nights.
The book can be purchased on sale for $9.95 at www.katesworld.com.au
