The Craft Haven in Kippa-Ring is predominantly a ‘paint your own pottery’ studio, but it brings more than just decorated pottery creations to people – providing a creative respite for the community.

Weekly theme nights have become popular, offering a niche and a level of excitement connected to nostalgia, like the Charlie Brown Christmas pottery paint night to be held this month.

The venue also hosts themed pottery nights and private events, such as birthdays and work team-building activities. Customers can also drop in anytime during opening hours to paint their own choice of pottery.

According to the owner of The Craft Haven, Dani Minahan, the idea for a creative space that was bright and welcoming to all abilities arose out of the isolation of the pandemic.

“This meant offering a space with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where anyone can come and learn and have fun experimenting creatively,” Ms Minahan said.

Themed Paint Events and the New Clay Hub Studio

Participants at The Craft Haven can choose from a wide range of ever-changing pottery pieces for purchase, then sit and enjoy some time to unwind and create.

“We then take care of the next steps, firing the pieces in our kiln and having it ready to collect a couple of weeks later,” Ms Minahan said.

On theme nights, the studio often includes extras like trivia, unique pottery pieces, themed drinks, and speciality stencils to help bring the theme to life.

Other themed events this month include a Harry Potter Yule Ball, Paint with Santa, a Grinch Paint Party with a movie screening, Hunger Games trivia, Friendsgiving and an extended painting session.

“Though a large range of our pottery is purchased from suppliers, we also offer a lot of pottery that we have poured ourselves from vintage moulds,” Ms Minahan said.

A few doors down from The Craft Haven, Ms Minahan has also recently opened a new clay studio called the Clay Hub, “where customers can play with clay and create pieces from scratch and learn the entire process.”
