Redcliffe-based artist Blair Garland has taken out the 2025 Moreton Bay Art Prize for her deeply personal work, Flesh and Blood.

The annual prize recognises outstanding artistic talent from across City of Moreton Bay, and Blair’s evocative piece stood out among 42 shortlisted entries.

Blair, who has been creating art inspired by her lived experience, said the winning work was part of a long-term exploration.

“Throughout the last five years, I have been creating a series of artworks exploring my life as a menopausal woman, reflecting on 38 years of fertility coming to an end,” Blair said.

Flesh and Blood: Exploring Identity, Womanhood and Change

In Flesh and Blood, Blair repurposes bed linen, scarves, dresses, and her own hair – materials she collected during her transition through menopause. The work explores themes of identity, memory, and transformation, offering a visceral and tangible connection to her past and present self. Through raw honesty and sophisticated technique, Blair examines ageing and womanhood in a way that resonated deeply with the judging panel.

The Moreton Bay Art Prize is open to artists aged 18 and over living in City of Moreton Bay or identifying as a Kabi Kabi, Turrbal, or Jinibara First Nations person. The prize pool totals $10,000.

Blair’s winning artwork, along with all prize-winning and shortlisted entries, will be exhibited at Pine Rivers Art Gallery until 19 July.
