Research shows one in three people feels lonely – here is what a local charity is doing about it.
Community representatives, residents, service providers, volunteers and local agencies are invited to attend a special morning tea on Thursday, August 7, to officially launch the Cancel Loneliness campaign spearheaded by local charity Band of Brothers.
The Cancel Loneliness campaign aims to highlight and address the silent epidemic of social isolation affecting people of all ages in the Redcliffe community and beyond. Whether it’s an older resident living alone, a single parent doing it tough, or someone simply feeling disconnected, this campaign is about saying: we see you, and you matter.
Bryan Wiseman, President of Band of Brothers, said Cancel Loneliness is a unique concept because they are trying to change the community’s attitudes toward loneliness.
“This campaign is about encouraging real and regular conversations, by activating our local community to help identify their neighbours, peers, workmates and friends who might possibly be feeling lonely,” Bryan said. “And have them initiate conversations to let them know that we are here to help them create connection with others in a safe and confidential conversation.
“In our experience, most people are kind, and if they are aware of the signs of loneliness, they will want to help that person.
“We directly intervene through regular personal contact in preference to being ‘event’ focused. We think it’s essential that we treat everyone as an individual and support them in finding their own pathway.”
Get Involved: Cancel Loneliness Morning Tea Launch Event
The morning tea event will provide an opportunity for those who engage with the community to learn more about getting involved, partnering on outreach projects, or referring people who may benefit.
Interested organisations, support services and individuals are welcome to help kick off this vital community activation stage of the project. Participants will be part of the conversation about gaining more insight into recognising social isolation, how to combat the current crisis of loneliness, and how to help rebuild trust and connection in our society.
Cancel Loneliness begins by connecting people who care about building a stronger, kinder Redcliffe.
Free to attend, but RSVP here.
