If you’ve ever wanted to write a story that transports readers to another time, place or reality, this month’s workshop at Redcliffe Library may be just the inspiration you’ve been searching for.
Led by Australian author and academic Emily Larkin, Elements of Writing: World Building is a free creative writing session presented in partnership with Queensland Writers Centre. The three-hour workshop is designed to help writers explore the art of creating immersive fictional worlds.
Emily, who lectures in creative writing at the University of Queensland, is passionate about both storytelling and supporting emerging and established writers.
“The workshop is for writers at different stages in their writing journeys,” Emily said. “Events like this are a great way to connect with other writers; it’s a community experience, too.”
The session will blend practical writing exercises with guided discussion to help participants develop their own believable worlds.
“My aim is to create a really supportive and positive environment where we’re going to share and provide constructive feedback,” Emily said. “We’re not expecting anyone’s first draft to be perfect. We’re there to experiment and learn together, and if you don’t feel ready to share your work yet, that’s okay, too.
“World building isn’t just for fantasy or sci-fi. Writers who set their stories in the real world also need to create convincing settings. The techniques we’ll explore in the workshop will help with that, too.”
Writing Advice and Workshop Details
Emily has some valuable advice for writers looking to improve their craft.
“To be a great writer, it’s essential to read a lot,” she said. “The good news is most writers really enjoy reading.
“It’s also important to take opportunities to invest in your craft, whether that means carving out more time for reading and writing or attending workshops like this.
“The Queensland Writers Centre offers a range of writing workshops on various topics. I work at UQ, and we have a lot of writing courses for someone interested in the formal side of writing education.”
Don’t miss this opportunity to unlock your creativity and build compelling worlds under Emily’s expert guidance. Spaces are limited, so book now and begin crafting stories that captivate your readers.
