Artist Jason Gale, who was born and raised in Redcliffe, has been a lifelong resident of the area and attributes his early life experiences to shaping his body of work.
He conveys a distinctive signature, drawing inspiration from natural life to comic art and subsequently to more surrealist and fantasy styles.
According to Mr Gale, it was his father’s early introduction to creativity that made a lasting impression.
“My dad was a sculptor who sold statues throughout Redcliffe in the 1960s and 1970s,” Mr Gale said. “He passed away when I was six, and shortly after, I began drawing.”
Mr Gale said that by the age of 10, he had started painting, with a subject matter of mainly birds and other wildlife – but that this focus would soon broaden.
“I began drawing some comic art and moved into more surreal and fantasy styles, as influenced by Derek Riggs, H.R. Giger and some Renaissance masters,” he said.
Artistic Recognition and Future Directions
The artist said that while his interest in painting “inner worlds” and drawing inspiration from dreams increased in his twenties, it wasn’t until his early forties that he started showing his work in public.
“I began with bird paintings (which sold well), but winning the champion painting section at the Pine Rivers show with a surrealist work encouraged me to show more of this style,” Mr Gale said.
The Final Layer is a highly characteristic piece – in this instance, evoking some of the artist’s earliest recollections and embodying catharsis.
“It’s all about letting go of the things we don’t need to carry into our present lives, and there are images in there from me going to preschool and seeing the world outside for the first time,” he said.
“Dad’s statues float in the clouds, while the small boat represents migration to better places and the gift of watching it all unfold.”
As well as featuring in several exhibitions, Mr Gale’s artworks have enjoyed commercial success via Moreton Bay-based businesses Red Poppy Collective and Seaside Artists Gallery.
“Now I am working on larger works and looking for other venues to show them,” Mr Gale said.
