Three acclaimed Australian authors will visit Moreton Bay libraries this month as part of the Brisbane Writers Festival’s ‘Beyond Brisbane’ series.
In partnership with City of Moreton Bay libraries, the festival will bring authors Kate Grenville, Pip Williams and Monica McInerney to local venues for discussions about their latest books.
Kate Grenville, author of award-winning and bestselling The Secret River, will appear at Redcliffe Library on Sunday, 11 October, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm to discuss The Country Schoolmaster: A Mystery in 88 Letters.
Kate said The Country Schoolmaster grew out of an obsession with some old letters she found in the archives about a schoolteacher in country New South Wales.
“They blossomed into a book that’s a glimpse into the foreign land of the past, a human mystery about a man I’m still curious about, and the record of a writer trying to get from a few old letters to a story,” Kate said. “I can’t wait to see what other people make of this odd hybrid of a book.”
She noted that events such as the one at Redcliffe Library provided an important connection between authors and readers.
“Reading is a solitary activity and so is writing, but you’re never alone if you’re part of the community of a library,” she said. “For an author, there’s such a buzz in talking to readers there – suddenly all those hours at the desk make sense, because a local library is where booklovers – readers and writers and all the people who do both – come together.”
