This Daffodil Day, locals are invited to put on their brightest yellow outfits and take a cold plunge at Margate Beach to show their support and raise funds in the fight against cancer.

The community event, to be held on Sunday, 24 August, was led by organiser and much-loved local, Tammy Struthers, whose courage and determination inspired many. Tammy passed away surrounded by family shortly before this article went to print, following her diagnosis in May with a rare and aggressive cancer.

Instead of retreating, Tammy turned her energy into something powerful, creating a legacy of strength, love and community action.

“In May this year, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer – metastatic adenocarcinoma,” Tammy said. “There is no treatment available, and I’ve been given only weeks to live.

“I wanted to organise a dip with my friends and family to raise money for cancer research, but more and more people started showing interest. I’ve been blown away by the support.”

Daffodil Day Dip: Raising Awareness With Heart

Event-goers will meet at the pavilion at Margate Beach and are encouraged to wear yellow in support, with each participant receiving a limited-edition Daffodil Day cap upon registration. A coffee van will be on-site, and attendees are encouraged to arrive before 8am to mingle, connect, and take photos together.

“I want this day to raise awareness and funds, but also be about love, strength, and remembering those who’ve been affected by this hideous disease,” Tammy said. “It’s about showing up for one another, even in the cold.”

For Tammy, the motivation behind organising the Daffodil Day Dip is deeply personal and one that will resonate with many people.

“Cancer touches all of us, whether directly or through someone we love,” she said. “With one in two Australians diagnosed by the age of 85, chances are someone in our community is facing it right now. This is for absolutely anyone and everyone. The more awareness we raise, the more people see they’re not alone.”
