Soul, rhythm and blues fans will have the chance to relive the songs and showmanship of the Blues Brothers and Aretha Franklin when a special tribute comes to Redcliffe next month.
The Fabulous Blues Brothers and Aretha will take the stage at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on 7 August, inspired by the 1980s film and the characters from Saturday Night Live. The audience can expect hits including Soul Man, Shake A Tail Feather, Respect and more.
Producer and performer Tristan James, who stars as Elwood Blues, said the combination of Blues Brothers and Aretha Franklin hits had proven irresistible to audiences.
“People know the Blues Brothers music is fun, but what they don’t expect is just how much of a party this show becomes,” Tristan said.
“Before long you’ve got people singing along, clapping, dancing in their seats and laughing with the cast. It really is two-and-a-half hours of pure entertainment.”
Bringing Soul Legends to the Redcliffe Stage
International performer Brad Kendrick appears as Jake, bringing more than 20 years of experience starring in Blues Brothers productions around the world.
Brad said the Blues Brothers were an “internationally, instantly recognisable brand and band for very good reason”.
“They revived the careers of some of the greatest soul, rhythm and blues and blues artists at a time where those styles were struggling,” he said.
He said the live band and horn section are incredibly important to the show.
“They’re the heart and soul of it!” he said.
Joining Brad and Tristan is American-born vocalist Asabi Goodman as Aretha Franklin. Asabi has appeared in major musical theatre productions including Chicago and Hairspray! The Musical.
Asabi described Aretha’s music as “empowering, uplifting and moving”.
“It resonates across time and speaks to every generation,” she said.
“Aretha’s music has had a huge influence on my life from an early age, and it’s such a joy to be able to perform her songs in front of audiences who appreciate them as much as I do.
“I hope our show brings a bit of joy and entertainment through nostalgia, and connects with audiences who love this type of music.”
Brad said he hoped audiences would leave the theatre talking about the experience and rediscovering the music that inspired it.
“I want everyone that comes to party with us in Redcliffe to have a fantastic night and leave the show wanting to go out and buy some great albums of these artists to keep the party going,” he said.
