Gather your little ones and celebrate NAIDOC Week this month with a special painting workshop.
Hosted by Kabbi Kabbi artist Melinda Serico, the workshop at the Redcliffe Art Gallery will feature painting with natural ochre pigments.
As facilitator and artist, Melinda said the children would learn all about ochre.
“In this current workshop, the children will learn the different names of the ochre colours, how ochre colours can be used and how they are associated with different tribes/language groups,” Melinda said.
Learning Through Art and Culture
“They will see how ochre is prepared and mixed, ready to paint the different designs linked to different parts of Australia.”
Each participant will receive a take-home bag, featuring four colours of ochre, glue and a canvas board.
By far, the most important part of the workshop is learning through creativity.
“Education is so important for Aboriginal people to be understood,” Melinda said.
“I enjoy a variety of things while doing these workshops, including sharing my knowledge, the questions I get from children, seeing the children coming up with their designs and artworks, and teaching the children that we only take what we need.”
Bookings required. Tickets are $10.
