A local women’s association is in danger of closing and is looking for support and membership to stay open.

Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) in Clontarf is hosting a public meeting on 12 July to raise awareness of its services.

Division Secretary, Anna Mead, said the meeting aimed to make the public aware of QCWA.

“(We hope) the meeting can educate the public on what the organisation does in the community,” Anna said.

“We are looking to increase our branch membership and hope to encourage both younger women who may work part-time or at-home mums, along with those women who have recently retired and are looking for companionship and a way to give back to the community.”

The Clontarf branch was established in 1947 and had up to 127 members at its peak.

Members often participate in crafts, cooking, outings and competitions.

“(We also) fundraise for organisations such as The Royal Flying Doctors, Domestic Violence and Rural Crisis Fund, to name just a few,” Anna said.

“Above all, it’s the friendship and companionship created with the meeting of like-minded women supporting their community.”
