Colin Scobie and Rotary Club of Redcliffe Sunrise have transformed an overseas excursion and an exploration of personal legacy into a project to help the Solomon Islands’ citizens.
This took the form of vital donations of triage medical diagnostic kits to the Western Provincial Gizo Hospital, which were delivered in early November.
Colin Scobie, who is Vice President of the Redcliffe Sunrise Rotary Club, said while he was initially motivated to travel to the Solomon Islands to follow his father’s footsteps during WWII, this evolved into a drive to do something positive for the community in its present state.
“The triage and diagnostic equipment was a good way of taking something sustainable so that it could be distributed out to the community centres across the Islands,” Mr Scobie said.
Supporting Health and Community
Mr Scobie said that the effort, while overwhelmingly positive, was not without considerable planning and an in-depth chat with a Rotary Giza representative, Matthias Amalo, was also instrumental.
“We made a list of the diagnostic equipment that would be essential for when you present at a hospital, such as blood pressure testing machines, thermometers, fingertip oxygen testers, glucose level testing machines and more,” he said.
Mr Scobie said that due to limited resources most rural health centres do not have such machines and equipment but they “manage it as best they can”.
Speaking on the delivery of essential medical equipment, he said it was a good stepping stone, especially in addressing medical needs which are first response.
“Visiting the Solomon Islands gave a real hands-on perspective of what is required and how to help people further without upsetting their way of life,” Mr Scobie said.
Mr Scobie is planning a delivery of school textbooks to Solomon Islands’ communities, as well as a clean-up of plastics on the islands’ shores.
He thanked Rotary International for its funding as well as Rotary members of both Gizo and Redcliffe Sunrise and other Rotarian members who are affiliated with supporting Gizo Island projects.
