Living and breathing clothes is what local stylist Bonnie Lee does on the daily, but she also has found meaningful ways to give back to the surrounding community.
Through her own business, Thread Cult Co, and connection to initiatives like Project Herself (which aims to break cycles of incarceration for women), Bonnie is able to provide services and styled outfits for people beginning a new journey in their lives.
According to Bonnie, she first made the move to “bricks and mortar” after her boss and now mentor, Maddie Doolan, gave her the opportunity to rent a space in Dakis Arcade on Redcliffe’s foreshore, selling vintage and designer clothing items.
“I was able to draw on my skill and experience to incorporate my personal stylist service and establish my business’s point of difference,” Bonnie said.
Bonnie looked to connect with communities of the disadvantaged demographic and reached out to a friend on social media, whereby she was introduced to the team at Project Herself.
“I could apply my styling skills to people who’d found themselves in situations where putting their best self forward would be advantageous to their outcomes — be that a court hearing, exiting or entering the legal and prison system, rehabilitation facility clients, job seeking after treatment, or anyone needing a new wardrobe to give them a head start,” she said.
From Fashion Industry Experience to Community Impact
With a background in the fashion industry that has spanned over twenty years, Bonnie has modelled for major brands (including walking the runway at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week) as well as being a featured extra on television and working as a recognised editorial stylist.
In terms of her shop, Thread Cult Co, she is able to offer (by appointment) a wardrobe overhaul service, where she restyles existing clothes into outfits combining new additions, as well as personal shopping and complete restyling (includes hair, makeup and more).
Bonnie said that expressions of interest were extended to assist businesses providing life-changing support to individuals in need.
