Curious minds are being invited to share their interests, ideas and stories at a Bring Your Own Wonder (BYOW) gathering in Redcliffe.
Held at Redcliffe Library on Tuesday, 6 October, the community gathering will give people the chance to share something that fascinates them, or simply listen, ask questions and join the conversation.
BYOW founder Greg Dodge said the idea grew from his own curiosity and a desire to create a space for locals to explore interesting topics together.
“I wanted to explore creating a safe space for us local humans to connect and discuss interesting topics that are contributed by those that attend,” Greg said.
“This is why I created it – to discover, learn, meet new people and share new topics that create the joy of sharing the wonders of the world.”
Approximately 10 to 20 adults will attend each gathering, keeping the setting informal and conversational. No qualifications or presentation experience are required.
Contributions could include a story, poem, song, presentation or question, with topics ranging from science, history and nature to philosophy, spirituality, culture and the arts.
Greg said he hoped BYOW would attract younger, middle-aged and older adults, creating opportunities for people from different generations to learn from one another.
“Social cohesion is healthy for young and older communities to have deeper conversations than the mainstream collective,” Greg said. “It’s good for our brain and belonging to share and learn.”
Those wanting to present are asked to register beforehand, as presenter time is limited to 10 to 15 minutes.
Fostering Intergenerational Connections and Open Dialogue
Greg said different opinions were welcome, with the gatherings giving people a chance to explore different viewpoints without needing to agree.
“It’s a place where you learn to agree or disagree and still be friends,” he said. “We’re not looking at people selling products or services, just being fully present.”
With family connections to the Redcliffe Peninsula spanning more than 30 years, Greg saw the area as a natural place to establish BYOW.
Gatherings will be held on the second Tuesday evening and fourth Saturday afternoon of each month, with the potential to expand to other parts of Moreton Bay and Brisbane.
The event is free to attend and open to adults aged 18 and over. Optional donations are welcome to help cover minor expenses.
