It is no small accomplishment to celebrate 65 years as an art society, and Redcliffe Art Society (RAS) plans to commemorate this milestone with an exhibition of prize-winning artwork from over the years.
The exhibition opening is set for Saturday, 3 October, alongside live music, food trucks, craft stalls, demonstrations and attractions to celebrate what is an entirely volunteer-run organisation with a permanent home at the heritage-listed Redcliffe Fire Station.
According to Deborah Eddy, Volunteer Gallery Manager at Redcliffe Art Society, the exhibition is quite eclectic but will be tinctured by an overall theme relating to the passion each artist brings to their chosen subject matter.
“All our members are grateful to have such a wonderful place to come and learn and exhibit, and they are excited to celebrate that they have these opportunities,” Ms Eddy said.
One such artist, Winnie Luk, said she was thrilled to take part in the event, particularly in that she felt “privileged to be invited to join other winning artists to take part in this historical exhibition.”
Celebrating Artistic Passions and Storytelling Connections
Ms Eddy said that when viewers inevitably read the artists’ statements at the exhibition, they will be able to observe the relationship between the subject matter and the artist’s connections to a particular location, colours or even personal recollections.
“There are those artists who are storytellers and those who revel in the natural world,” she said.
As highly fitting to the panoramic sweep of the exhibition itself, she said that the atmosphere at the event would be celebratory and inclusive to the wider community – complete with a huge birthday cake, visiting dignitaries, and, of course, the many artists present on the day.
“Many people may drive by the fire station and wonder what goes on here, and who doesn’t love a birthday party?” Ms Eddy said.
She said the volunteer team hoped to make the exhibition a “real standout celebration” that honours the past, celebrates the present and, most importantly, inspires younger creatives to see RAS as a place to create, helping secure its future through continued community support.
The exhibition runs until 25 October.
