Generations of students, staff and families will come together this month as Humpybong State School celebrates 150 years of education on the Redcliffe Peninsula.
The main celebrations will be held across two days, beginning with a family-friendly evening at Waterfront Oval featuring food trucks, live entertainment and a fire and light finale, followed by a day of reunions and alumni stories.
Humpybong State School P&C President Laura Ventura said the celebrations were open to anyone with a connection to the school.
“Whether you attended Humpybong decades ago, are part of the school today, or simply have a connection to the local community, the celebrations are for you,” Laura said.
The school’s story began on 1 February 1876, when the Redcliffe Peninsula was still a relatively isolated settlement, and the original school opened in a small slab-and-bark building near the corner of Elizabeth Avenue and Duffield Road, Clontarf. Since then, the school has continued to grow alongside the Redcliffe community, educating generations of local families.
A Family’s Four Generations at Humpybong
One of those families has a history at Humpybong spanning more than seven decades.
Judy Weedman, known as Judith Fountain during her school years, attended Humpybong from around 1953 to 1959, while her great-granddaughter Indie Fisher began at Humpybong in 2021. Indie’s father, Drew Fisher, also attended from 1988 to 1994.
Judy said it was special to see the connection continue across the generations.
“It’s been 50-odd years between me and my great-granddaughter going to the same school,” Judy said.
For Drew, returning to Humpybong with Indie brings back memories of his own school days.
“It’s nostalgic when I visit the school now with Indie and I see some original buildings and how many new ones are there,” Drew said. “Remembering school friends and teachers I had there is always nice.”
Laura said the anniversary was an opportunity to recognise those who had helped shape the school throughout its history.
“Very few schools can look back on 150 years of history, and it gives us a wonderful opportunity to honour the generations of students, staff, families and community members who have all played a part in Humpybong’s story,” she said.
