If it slithers, crawls, or climbs, you’ll be able to see it at the Redcliffe Recreational Wildlife and Education Day.
Coming to the Redcliffe Showgrounds on 3 October, the event is a chance for families to meet all kinds of reptiles and other wildlife and learn from experienced keepers.
Reptiles SEQ Inc treasurer, Ashley O’Brien, said there would be something for everyone.
“We’ll have a venomous snake demonstration, wildlife shows, and there will also be two wildlife rescue groups there, helping people know what they should and shouldn’t do for injured wildlife,” he said.
“There will also be up to 10 vendors there where people can learn about what it’s like to have a reptile as a pet, and if they have the correct licence, they can buy reptiles on the day.”
Keeping Reptiles as Pets
Ashley said reptiles made excellent pets.
“Lots of people have cats and dogs, but this event is great for people to be able to get to know reptiles, see what they’re like as pets, and know how to look after them,” he said.
“To keep reptiles as a pet you do need a license through the Queensland Government.”
He added most reptiles were “low maintenance” pets.
“Once bearded dragons and blue tongue lizards hit 12 months of age, they only need to be fed once a week, and if you have the right set up, that mimics their natural environment, they’re very happy,” Ashley said.
“And they’re also quite affectionate. We have blue tongue lizards that like being patted on the belly, and they’re certainly as happy to see you as a dog or cat would be.”
The reptile show will also be a great place to learn about safety around reptiles, and what to do in an emergency.
“Most people who do get bitten by a snake, happens because they’re trying to kill it – just leave them alone, or call someone who is licensed to come and take care of it,” Ashley said.
“This is their home; we’re the ones living in it.
“It’s about respecting our wildlife and making a safe place for them.”
