Redcliffe Musical Theatre (RMT) are set to bring a selection of Broadway’s biggest shows to the stage with Blockbuster Broadway.
The four-show concert will be held at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre from 4 to 6 September, featuring songs from productions the community theatre group has not yet performed.
RMT president Madeleine Johns said Blockbuster Broadway was inspired by discussion around what the theatre company’s 2027 shows should be.
“When we looked at the great variety of blockbuster shows that RMT had yet to perform, we realised that we actually had the basis for a show sitting right there in selecting our favourite songs from shows ‘waiting in our wings’ to be performed at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre,” she said.
“This concert is based on songs from 12 Broadway titles, and we will be doing a countdown during August, as one of the shows featured in the concert will be a show that we will confirm that RMT will perform as part of their 2027 program.”
The production features songs from Les Misérables, Chicago, Dear Evan Hansen, Matilda, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, West Side Story, Beetlejuice, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, Evita and Miss Saigon. More than 50 performers aged from eight to over 60 will take part in the production.
A Celebration of Musical Theatre Favourites
Madeleine said the musical she was most excited for audiences to see was a selection from Miss Saigon “as it is so rarely performed due to the cost of staging the production, as it requires the producers to re-create a helicopter taking off from Saigon as one of the main highlights of the staging”.
“Based on the opera Madame Butterfly, it is a modern rock opera touching on very difficult topics of war and racial tension – highly emotionally charged, it is one of the most moving pieces of theatre I have ever experienced,” she said.
She said that two songs that RMT is most excited to bring to the stage during Blockbuster Broadway are Buenos Aires from Evita – “another classic from Andrew Lloyd Webber – it’s such a fun, upbeat number that captures the energy and excitement of the Argentinian City,” Madeleine said), and Waving Through A Window from Dear Even Hansen, which Madeline described as “from a very modern musical with strong themes of the power of social media”.
The production follows more than 16 years of performances at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre, with Redcliffe Musical Theatre having staged more than 35 musicals at the venue.
