Many local pet owners have welcomed plans for a new off-leash dog park in Margate, saying it reflects demand for dog-friendly spaces across the Redcliffe Peninsula.
City of Moreton Bay recently backed a proposal for a dog area at Barry Bolton Park. The project was highlighted in a recent council update, which noted the park would help improve access to dog exercise areas across growing suburbs while reducing pressure on existing facilities.
Among those supporting the proposal is local pet owner Sandy Green, owner of dog walking company Urban Tailz.
“I have the privilege of working alongside a wonderful team of pet lovers who provide dog walking services throughout the Redcliffe Peninsula,” Sandy said.
“Through our work, we spend a lot of time with local pets and their families, so we see first-hand how important dog-friendly spaces are to the community.”
Sandy said she believes the focus should be on creating quality spaces that are accessible and well maintained.
“The Peninsula has a massive dog-loving community, so quality infrastructure is becoming increasingly important,” she said.
“Rather than just adding more parks, it’s about having well-designed, well-maintained spaces in the right locations. Additional, thoughtfully placed areas give owners options closer to home and help reduce overcrowding in our existing parks.”
Calls for Quality Dog-Friendly Infrastructure
Facilities such as the proposed Margate dog park can provide valuable opportunities for dogs to exercise and socialise.
“Dog parks are fantastic assets, but they only work when everyone uses them responsibly,” Sandy said. “Owners should ensure their dogs have reliable recall, always supervise interactions, and recognise when their pet might be feeling overwhelmed.”
Sandy said supporting infrastructure should also be considered alongside new dog park developments.
“We also need to see this infrastructure and surrounding Council streets supported by more rubbish receptacles for dog poo disposal in a lot more of our streets and parks,” she said.
“It’s a team effort; while owners must always clean up after their pets, having the right facilities nearby makes responsible pet ownership much easier for everyone.”
The proposed off-leash area at Barry Bolton Park remains in the early planning stages, with no construction timeline announced.
