Book lovers and art enthusiasts are invited to an afternoon of storytelling and inspiration as two local authors share the stories behind their newly released books.
Held on Saturday, 31 May, at the Seaside Artists Gallery, the event will celebrate the official book launch of author and artist Gretta Kennedy alongside renowned author Katy More.
Gretta, a Redcliffe local, lives with a rare neurological condition called Chronic Disorder of Glycosylation 1a and draws from personal experience in both her writing and visual art. Her creative work aims to promote awareness of people living with disability and to teach children not to bully anyone who is different.
“Storytelling allows me to convey my messages about inclusiveness and treating people with disabilities with respect and no differently,” Gretta said.
“Publishing my messages in print format always allows me to spread my messages in a way that everybody can access.”
Writing About Disability
Writing became a form of self-expression during her teenage years, offering a creative outlet that later developed into a platform for advocacy.
“I believe that disability should not define who you are,” Gretta said. “Through my books, I hope to foster greater understanding and celebrate the unique contributions that individuals with disabilities bring to our world.”
Gretta has written a growing collection of illustrated children’s books that focus on themes of resilience and belonging and is launching her latest book, The New Baby Sister.
“I have made my books bright and colourful to appeal to children of all ages to help them understand the challenges that people with differences face every day,” she said. “My hope is that children will be more empathetic and be more accepting of the differences.”
Joining Gretta at the book launch is Katy More, whose latest novel, Echoes of Treason, explores themes of intrigue, betrayal and resilience.
“I love exploring the complexities of human nature through my writing,” Katy said. “With Echoes of Treason, I wanted to take readers on a journey through suspense, moral conflict and the choices that define us.”
The afternoon will include a meet and greet with both authors, as well as book signings, live music, light refreshments and a showcase of art from local visual artists and crafters.
Entry is free. All ages are welcome.
