Bringing two distinct elements into her artwork in installation and eco-dyeing, artist Natalie Billing is gearing up to bring her latest exhibit to Moreton Bay gallery The Loft.
The exhibition, Veiled, will begin with an opening night in May, with attendees able to peruse the works and enjoy refreshments.
Artist Natalie Billing, who brings with her over 25 years of experience, said that she was excited about exhibiting a series of oversized veils suspended in the gallery space, which represent feminine archetypes.
“I love to suspend artworks, and The Loft has all those wonderful exposed beams,” Ms Billing said about the gallery, adding that “installations aren’t about standing in front of an artwork – the audience gets to explore the space.”
Another type of exploration comes from her use of natural dyes, in what is referred to as eco-dyeing, which is a process that, according to Ms Billing, is “where you create a print and not just a colour from the leaves.”
“I use leaves I have gathered myself or that I have been gifted, and that way they have meaning and fit with my interest in memory,” she said.
Veiled Memories on Display at The Loft Gallery
According to Ms Billing, the nature of memory has always been central to her artwork.
“I am fascinated by how we, as humans, define ourselves by what we remember,” she said. “However, memory is notoriously fluid, changing to fit our current mood.”
Ms Billing’s personal memories reach back to her childhood in the central western Queensland town of Blackall, before years spent studying visual arts at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) – including the completion of an honours degree in sculpture.
“I have continued to exhibit and have created several history-based public artworks around Brisbane,” she said.
According to Ms Billing, “the arts are so vibrant in the Moreton Bay region,” as seen by her creative journey to the area, which includes recent eco-dyeing workshops at various local libraries as well as the upcoming gallery display.
