Every Easter weekend, the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (B2G) sets sail, captivating sailing enthusiasts and creating an exciting event for spectators. First held in 1949, this prestigious occasion has grown into one of Australia’s most anticipated ocean yacht races.

The 308-nautical-mile race begins on Good Friday in Bramble Bay, just off Shorncliffe, and follows a challenging course up the Queensland coast to the finish line in Gladstone. Over the decades, the event has seen remarkable performances, record-breaking sprints and dramatic battles against the elements.

What started with just seven boats in its inaugural year has grown into a fiercely competitive event, featuring cutting-edge yachts and expert crews pushing the limits of speed and endurance. Strategy plays an important role, with skippers and navigators making tactical decisions to harness wind shifts, ocean currents and weather conditions.

Where to Watch the B2G

Redcliffe is a prime spot for enjoying the action as the race starts near Shorncliffe Pier and includes a turning marker at Redcliffe, meaning the yachts sail past the Peninsula shortly after the start. It’s also possible to take your own boat out to watch the festivities, but the bay gets busy, so it’s important to familiarise yourself with the race exclusion zone.

For those watching from land, there are fantastic vantage points on the Redcliffe Peninsula to see the fleet sail past Moreton Bay from the foreshore. Suttons Beach is an ideal vantage point, but you can base yourself anywhere along the coast at Margate, Woody Point or Ted Smout Bridge for great views.

The best time to catch the action is mid-to-late morning on Good Friday as the yachts make their way north. Pack up a picnic and some camping chairs and make a day of it! Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen!

For those unable to attend in person, or wanting to follow along after the yachts have sailed from view, live coverage and the official yacht tracker provide an exciting way to follow the race’s progress.

The event is a highlight of the Queensland sailing calendar, with celebrations at both the starting and finishing points.

Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or just love a good spectacle, the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is an exciting and exhilarating Easter tradition.
