Moreton Bay-based musician Josh Setterfield has spent years carving out his own sound and identity.
Now known for his country rock style, Josh has progressed from busking to international stages, amassing more than 10 million streams, over 130,000 followers, and four CMT (Country Music Television) number-one singles. His latest single, Unapologetic, reached number 10 on the country radio charts.
Josh said it had been a long road to get where he is today.
“A lot of artists get handed a lot of great opportunities, but I have had to work my absolute hardest for mine,” he said.
“Looking back, I’m okay with that, because it makes you appreciate the wins so much more, and really reminds you where you came from.”
His connection to music began early, listening to country music with his family. After moving from Newcastle to Redcliffe at age 12, he went on to form a punk rock band in high school.
“When I was a teen, I rebelled a little and thought I was pretty cool and went down that route,” he said. “But it was the world shift into country ‘ROCK’ that really captured my attention. It was like both my worlds were colliding and I was all in!”
Josh spent his teenage years “finding out who I was” in the Moreton Bay area.
“Loved it so much, I stuck around and am still around Moreton Bay now when I’m not on the road!” he said.
Josh’s career has continued to gain momentum, including nominations for Breakthrough Artist and Male Artist of the Year at the CountryTown Awards and performing on the main stage at CMC Rocks in 2024. His Kinda World Tour took him across Australia, Canada, the USA and the UK.
“Touring anywhere is great,” he said. “We’ve had so many amazing memories so far. Many amazing shows. I think one of the most outstanding moments was the entire band seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time.
“I love the live setting and meeting new people. But there’s nothing like coming back home.”
Despite his busy touring schedule, Josh said he was creating new music.
“Songs I am really excited about,” he said. “My team and I believe that we’ve come up with a new style of country music that may not have been done before. It’s country with a little rock, a little pop-punk and 100% ‘Josh Setterfield’.”
He released his latest single, Mud On Her Halo, last month.
While his recent acoustic show sold out, and another local performance hasn’t been announced, he said, “Never say never”.
“I’ve played a one-off show in Kallangur before, and our latest Brisbane date was almost held in Redcliffe,” he said. “It’s gonna happen!”
