One community-based organisation is improving the lives of those less fortunate this World Mental Health Day, one meal at a time.
On the Way – Moreton Bay has been providing free hot meals to the community for two months now, with the success of its soup kitchen, which was launched back in August.
President of On the Way – Moreton Bay, Roslyn Nuttall, said the organisation first started in May, when she and her daughter began delivering home-cooked meals.
“What started with meals from the back of a hatchback has grown into a charity feeding 50 to 100 people every week,” Roslyn said.
“I’ve lived with addiction and mental health struggles, so I understand, and that’s why I want to help others.”
The newest addition to On the Way – Moreton Bay is the soup kitchen, which is open every Tuesday, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, operating out of John Naumann Hall in Deception Bay.
“Thanks to donations, we provide hearty home-style meals and desserts, such as burgers, casseroles, pasta bakes, trifle, jelly, custard and fruit,” Roslyn said.
“Our soup kitchen is not just about a hot meal; it’s about creating a safe, welcoming space where people can connect and feel supported.”
The Power of Volunteering and Connection
The organisation is entirely run by volunteers, including one local teenager, Hayley.
“Hayley is one of our amazing young volunteers,” Roslyn said. “She is 17 years old and shows maturity, compassion, and kindness in the way she gives her time.
“Hayley lives with a disability and has found it hard to secure work in our community, but at On the Way – Moreton Bay, we don’t discriminate.
“She is a wonderful example of how, when given the opportunity, people shine.
“We are proud to have a mix of volunteers from young people like Hayley, through to retirees, who each bring something special to the team.”
Services like On The Way – Moreton Bay are vital for community mental health.
“Our dinners offer not just food but connection, dignity, and hope,” Roslyn said. “Sometimes, just chatting and sharing a meal can turn someone’s week around and remind them they are not alone.”
