While being a musician and a manager at a funeral business are ostensibly two very different things, for Natalie Cardenas, they do share some important parallels.
And although the band Simplicity was named a few years prior to this local singer’s decision to also work as a funeral director, this description seems to be a good fit for both positions.
According to Simplicity’s lead vocalist and location manager for Simplicity Funerals, Ms Cardenas, the band’s name came naturally to her and her fellow musicians based on the type of music they wanted to create.
“The name reflects a kind of raw authenticity, which has always been central to the band’s sound and ethos,” Ms Cardenas said.
Being in a band entails a sense of duty, according to Ms. Cardenas, who is focused on guiding people with professionalism and care in her position at Simplicity Funerals.
“I can’t do what I do in either role without using my whole heart to connect with those I am serving,” Ms Cardenas said.
Simplicity’s Sound and Musical Journey
As for Simplicity’s sound, Ms Cardenas said it was “raw, emotive, and stripped back in the best way.”
“Our influences are varied, ranging from classic icons like The Beatles and Neil Young to more contemporary acts such as The Cranberries, Van Morrison, 4 Non Blondes and even a touch of acoustic singer-songwriters,” she said.
According to Ms Cardenas, the band’s focus on providing both instrumental and lyrical depth is best delivered in an intimate atmosphere that allows them to really connect with their audience.
“There’s something special about playing at local community spots, where we’ve had the chance to engage with people who’ve supported us from the very beginning.”
Ms Cardenas said that she and her fellow band members were incredibly grateful for the opportunities offered by the local music scene (they are currently playing at venues across the greater Brisbane area).
In terms of music available via streaming, some tracks are scheduled for release on Spotify and Apple Music soon.
For now, you can follow Simplicity at Facebook and Instagram (also keep an eye out for their emerging website).
