Jungle perch are one of Queensland’s most fascinating freshwater species, found in clear rainforest streams and rivers, with their range stretching as far south as Fraser Island/K’gari. Growing to 50cm and around 3kg, though most caught are smaller, they are known for their sleek, silver-bronze bodies and explosive surface strikes. For this reason, they are a favourite among light-tackle anglers.
Stocking, Conservation and Natural Habitat
Recently, jungle perch have been stocked in Lake Kurwongbah and Enoggera Reservoir, boosting local fishing opportunities and supporting their conservation. These fish are highly sensitive to water quality, making them a fantastic indicator of healthy river systems.
This month’s feature pic comes from Eli Creek on Fraser Island/K’gari – a prime example of the pristine habitat jungle perch calls home. The shot was taken while filming them feeding on March flies that were biting us while standing in the water, adding an up-close look at their unique behaviour.
