The once well-lit street of Landsborough Avenue in Scarborough is now much darker – and some members of the community have expressed concerns about safety.
A resident of Landsborough Avenue, Jan, said that since many lights have been removed, she no longer feels safe to venture out at night.
“Solar-powered lighting used to hang from the trees in Landsborough Avenue in long tubes, and most businesses had fairy lights on the trees outside their shops, which lit up the street and made it very festive as well as safe,” Jan said.
“The lights have been completely removed, and I don’t know why.
“Now it is very dark and a bit frightening, and I am worried about falling, as I am sure other people are too. I also will not walk my dog at night.”
Some residents have said they are concerned about certain crimes that thrive under the cover of darkness. In February, Queensland Police reminded residents in the Scarborough area to secure their homes and apartments due to the opportunistic nature of local property thefts.
“We are a Neighbourhood Watch building and are aware of a few problems,” Jan said.
She said Scarborough was a lovely area to live in and that she would love to see it safe and thriving.
“Restoring lighting would not only make it safe but would encourage more residents to walk along Landsborough Avenue at night,” she said.
She added that she and a neighbour had raised the issue with Council.
Council Investigates Proposal for New Fairy Lights
In response to a query from the Redcliffe Guide, a City of Moreton Bay spokesperson for the Mayor said Council continues to investigate the viability of the proposal to install new fairy lights along the eastern side of Landsborough Avenue between Anderson Street and Bunton Street.
“We acknowledge that some residents have indicated their support for the reintroduction of the lights, citing safety improvements, and other residents have expressed concerns about potential light spill into their apartments,” the spokesperson said.
“It is important that Council continue to canvas all views related to the project. The final outcome will depend on further discussions with the community and site investigations in order to determine the feasibility for the lighting installation.”
