The Queensland Country Women’s Association branch on the Redcliffe Peninsula has entered a new chapter, following a successful community call-out that saw local women step forward to save the long-standing group from closure.
Formerly known as the Queensland Country Women’s Association Clontarf, the branch has recently been renamed the Queensland Country Women’s Association Redcliffe Peninsula, a move the committee said better reflects the broader community it serves.
Once a new committee was formed, members agreed the updated name was an important step forward. A spokesperson for the QCWA said, “We wanted to make the name sound inclusive of the whole peninsula.”
Last year, the future of the branch was uncertain after the committee dissolved and leadership roles remained unfilled. A call was put out to the community, prompting support from local and regional QCWA leaders, who helped facilitate both daytime and evening meetings to ensure as many women as possible could attend.
Since then, attendance numbers have continued to grow, with more women reconnecting with the branch each month.
“Attendance numbers are increasing each month, which is great,” the QCWA spokesperson said. “It will give the QCWA the chance to continue to support local women, young and young at heart, to connect, laugh and contribute to our community.”
Rebuilding Connections and Growing Community
The newly reformed committee is now focused on rebuilding community connections and creating a welcoming space for local women. Monthly gatherings are held once a month on Tuesdays, where women come together for a cup of tea, a chat, and some craft.
Those interested in contributing in other ways are also encouraged to get involved, with the group welcoming help with making jams, preserves, pickles, savoury relishes, baking, or other craft items ahead of their first fundraiser planned for early May.
The spokesperson said the strength of the branch “lies in its people”.
“There are some great members with great personalities and connections who are well placed to address the needs of our community,” they said.
Reflecting on the journey so far, the committee spokesperson said that they were most proud that the branch remained active and evolving.
