For the Redcliffe Outrigger Canoe Club Inc (ROCC), representing Australia in the World National Sprint Competition in Singapore this August will be a massive milestone, but it’s almost a drop in the ocean compared to their ongoing and historical accomplishments.
Their team ranked second overall at the Australia Nationals in Coomera last year after competing against 67 clubs nationwide, a testament to the dedication and discipline of a club that is also responsible for fostering community engagement and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
According to ROCC Head Coach Jean Tetohu, outrigging is a unique sport in that it’s intimate – requiring synergy and a quiet yet controlled strength.
“It challenges physical and mental thresholds, and [for those who want to take it to the professional level, especially] it takes commitment, discipline and a lot of time,” Jean said.
Jean said that he had seen three generations perform at the international level, which is something that you don’t see often and is “in itself special.”
“When you’re surrounded by the right people, the itch to perform on a national, let alone world, stage becomes infectious,” he said.
Jean works with other club members as well as volunteers to create pathways for people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds to participate.
“It’s about creating a safe space amongst our community across generations, sharing and coaching [what is] a lifestyle – not just a sport,” he said.
According to ROCC Vice President Ange, this supportive atmosphere is integral to ongoing success, as “without our paddling community, including valued volunteers, our club would not exist.”
The club offers ‘Come and Try’ outrigging experiences, with all equipment provided, including life jackets.
ROCC is also seeking support through fundraising and sponsorship to help its members attend the international competition in August.
“With your support, it would make it easier for our paddlers to focus on getting to the finish line without the stress of having to worry about money,” Ange said.
