New Disability Dance Classes For Young Adults

Red Music + Dance’s Studio Director, Melissa Mataic, prides herself on creating a space for all dancers, regardless of their ability.

So when families began enquiring about a program that genuinely supported young people with additional needs and disabilities, she said the decision to introduce one at the Clontarf-based performing arts school felt both natural and necessary.

Much of the inspiration for putting on disability classes for teenagers and young adults came about because she found out from friends that there were limited options for those with disabilities in this age bracket.

“There are very few programs designed specifically for this age group,” Melissa said.

“Yet it’s such an important time in life for confidence, independence, friendships and belonging. We wanted to create a space where they could continue to grow and feel celebrated.”

That vision led Red Music + Dance to partner up with Perform Ability, a structured, evidence-based program designed to support dancers with disability, neurodiversity, and a wide range of learning and physical needs.

Teachers undertook specialised training which helps equip instructors with practical strategies to adapt movement, communicate clearly, and support emotional regulation. Class structures were adjusted, transitions smoothed, and environments carefully considered to minimise potential overwhelm. The dance studio moved to a new location over the Christmas break, and making it disability-accessible was a big priority.

Perform Ability Classes Supporting Confidence and Growth

A timetable is currently being put together, but these Red Music + Dance Perform Ability classes are aimed at young people aged 12 to 23.

“Because it’s such a crucial time for building confidence, independence, friendship, social skills, the classes suit participants who want a supportive dance experience that helps them grow, and feel proud of what they achieve,” Melissa said.

“They deserve opportunities that don’t disappear just because they’re getting older. We’re always working to make our studio as welcoming and accessible as possible and bringing this program to life has helped us strengthen that even more.”

Looking ahead, Melissa hopes to expand the program to include additional age groups as demand continues to grow. Already, she said, the response from families has been overwhelmingly positive.
