The main goal of Margate Family Op Shop is to keep things affordable for the local community by selling its donated inventory of clothes, home goods and other items for just two dollars.
Located on Baynes Street, the popular shop has recently changed ownership, as well as been registered as an official charity.
According to owner and trustee Cheryl Williams, the big difference is the capped two-dollar price point (the store is also known as the ‘$2 Op Shop’).
“People are so happy with the two-dollar price, and I get told that just about every day,” Cheryl said.
She said many in the community were relieved to know the business had been purchased and kept running, considering “we never inflate prices, and we donate to local organisations and charities too.”
Donations and Community Support
The only issue with the low price point is a high stock turnover, with the shop reliant on frequent donations to stay operational.
“Donations of clothing are what we generally need most (size 16 plus is really popular), but we also need kitchenware, linen, and similar,” Cheryl said.
