This month, The Garage Band invites audiences into an alternate universe where The Beatles never became famous, offering a creative twist on music history.
The show is part of the Anywhere Festival Moreton Bay, running from 8 to 25 May, with performances popping up in local businesses and community spaces.
The Garage Band creator and writer Andrew Munslow, who plays John Lennon, said the play premiered at Act 1 Theatre in Strathpine a few years ago.
“My partner in crime, Debbie Hossack, was putting together a season of one-act plays and there was a gap, so she asked me if I would get together with some of our band members and fill up the spot with some music,” Andrew said.
For the current production, Andrew decided to expand the band by adding a bass player.
“It just worked perfectly – the Beatles were originally a five-piece band, which included Pete Best,” he said. “And let’s face it, it’s a multiverse so anything can make sense.
“It’s not much of a stretch to imagine that somewhere The Beatles just didn’t hit at the right time and they never became famous.
“There actually is a message that we are sending out and people will understand when they see it.”
The Anywhere Festival Takes the Stage at Scarborough
For Andrew, the Anywhere Festival gives local artists a valuable platform to showcase their work.
“Creating something, rehearsing it, putting it together logistically and then performing it in public is a microcosm of life,” he said. “It throws all kinds of challenges at you, but it balances them with rewards. That journey can’t be completed without a platform with which to showcase what we work so hard to put together – without platforms like the Anywhere Festival.”
The Garage Band will take the stage for three performances at Scarborough Harbour Brewing Co, a family-friendly venue and a hub for live music. The brewery will also host the festival opening on Thursday, 8 May at 6pm.
Director Sonia Schweitzer said Scarborough Harbour Brewing Co looked forward to being involved in the Anywhere Festival.
“To be selected as the host of the opening is an exciting opportunity,” she said. “The Garage Band will be bringing a different performance than we have had at the venue before. We hope the community shows some support and comes and enjoys the show.”
In addition to the show, attendees can enjoy the brewery’s award-winning craft beer, fresh beers on tap, wine, spirits, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages, and food from their onsite kitchen.
