This month, you’re invited to take part in the Great Southern BioBlitz (GSB) – a global citizen science event that celebrates the incredible variety of life across the Southern Hemisphere.

Moreton Bay locals are encouraged to record plants, animals and insects in their area using the iNaturalist app, to create a snapshot of the region’s unique flora and fauna.

Redcliffe residents really got behind the GSB last year, snapping and sharing images that showcased local plants and wildlife. This year, ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group) Moreton Bay is back as the local organiser.

ESRAG Oceania Chair and Rotary Redcliffe Sunrise Vice President, Colin Scobie, said it was the perfect community activity for all ages.

“Download the iNaturalist app from your Android or Apple app store and enrol in the Moreton Bay Local Government Area,” Colin said. “It’s a chance to connect with nature, record your observations and discover more about our local plants and animals.”

How to Participate and Get Involved

The GSB also inspires everyday actions that support the environment.

“It’s amazing to see more people replacing their lawns and gardens with native plants to attract wildlife such as native stingless bees,” Colin said.

Anyone can join by uploading observations made in the Southern Hemisphere during the event. The GSB runs from 24 to 27 October, with uploads accepted until 10 November.

You can also grow your own wildlife-friendly garden with a free native plant voucher from City of Moreton Bay.
