Javelin fish, better known to local anglers as grunter, are a popular catch around Redcliffe, Sandgate and throughout Moreton Bay. These sleek, silver fish are famous for the grunting noise they make when landed and for their reputation as both a strong fighter and a top-quality table fish.

They are often found around sandy drop-offs, rocky patches, creek mouths and areas where tidal flow carries baitfish and prawns. Fresh bait such as prawns, squid strips, pike fillets or small pilchards works well. I have caught the odd one on a soft plastic lure while targeting other species.

Fishing and Cooking Grunter

Javelin fish in Moreton Bay commonly range between 35–45cm, though they can grow up to around 60cm. On the plate, they are superb, with sweet white flesh that suits baking, grilling or pan-frying. I’d confidently rate them 4.5 out of 5 stars for eating quality.
