This month, step back in time to Elizabethan England as Introspect Theatre Company Inc brings the story of Shakespeare in Love to life in Redcliffe. Performances will run for two weekends at Emerge Church.

Based in North Brisbane, the not-for-profit company nurtures emerging artists and brings engaging, community-focused theatre to life. Since its founding in 2020, it has produced a range of performances that aim to connect audiences with history, culture, and the joy of live performance.

Directed by Szonja Meszaros, Shakespeare in Love is a romantic comedy that tells the fictional tale behind the creation of the world’s most iconic love story, Romeo and Juliet, putting a playful spin on the story we know and love. Audiences follow a young William Shakespeare as he struggles with writer’s block…until he meets Viola, a noblewoman with a secret love for theatre. What follows is a whirlwind of disguise, romance, and creativity.

“Directing Shakespeare in Love has been an absolute privilege,” Szonja said. “It has everything I love about theatre: passion, excitement, and the transformative power of storytelling.”

Assistant director Robyn Payne said audiences could expect to be fully immersed in the magic of the era.

“We are taking you back in time to Elizabethan England, where we meet a young Will Shakespeare who is struggling with writer’s block and debt collectors,” Robyn said. “Our story is full of mistaken identities, forbidden romance, and the chaos of theatre.”

“In this play, Will navigates love, lust, grief, and the creation of one of the most iconic plays in the history of theatre,” Gabriel said. “It has been an absolute privilege to step into this role.”
