One local school on the peninsula is excited to announce the launch of a café on the school grounds, which will eventually open to the community.

Clontarf Beach State High School is set to launch their Clontarf Beach Café in early May – a student-led initiative providing hands-on learning for students enrolled in the Certificate II Hospitality program.

Clontarf Beach SHS’ Hospitality VET teacher Kandice Cruden said she and HOD of Hospitality, Phil Morrison, saw the opportunity for students to use their VETiS (VET in schools) money to complete another certificate while at school or TAFE.

“Phil Morrison and I have been working closely together to set up the café, which will be instrumental in providing students with a real-world experience of a café setting in the safety of a school setting,” Kandice said.

“With my background as a chef and eight years of teaching experience, I provide the expertise and guidance needed to support our students.

“Our café will be about creating a space where everyone feels welcome to have meaningful connections over coffee, enhancing wellbeing amongst staff and students.”

Hands-On Hospitality Training for Students

The student-led café is designed to ensure 100 per cent course completion by learning skills that align with entry-level hospitality positions.

“Skills such as food preparation and safety, barista and beverage skills, cash handling and using the POS systems and customer service,” Kandice said.

Year 11 Certificate II Hospitality students Chloe Voulgaris and Gabriela Gallo said they were excited for the opportunity to receive tangible experience that would prepare them for work beyond the school grounds.

“As hospitality students ourselves, we think it will benefit us to get introduced into professional hospitality work experience and help us grow our skills before leaving school and going to a bigger work industry,” they said.

“(We) think working as a class together will help us build our communication with each other, build a stronger teamwork environment and get us ready for industry.”

The café will be located at the front of the school within the school grounds.

It will be open three days per week, before school only and will be open to the public once the students are confident.
