Pixie’s Laundry’s collection of colorful clothing items might seem whimsical, but there’s a strong purpose born of positivity behind the brand’s recycled and tie-dyed pieces available for purchase online by the public.
Moreton Bay resident April Rose Attard is the creator behind the alternative apparel, which retails on digital marketplaces such as Depop and Etsy, connecting with others who value originality and sustainable fashion.
According to April, Pixie’s Laundry grew out of things she’s always loved in “being creative, finding unique clothes, and giving them a second life.”
She said that over time, she started experimenting with screen printing and tie-dye, turning an appreciation for something simple into something completely unique.
“For me, it’s about slowing things down and being more thoughtful with what we wear because circular fashion gives clothes a longer life instead of it ending up as waste,” she said.
“It’s better for the planet, but it also makes fashion feel more individual again.”
Every piece at Pixie’s Laundry starts with finding something special, typically sourced from local charity stores, with April frequently rummaging local businesses such as Blackbird Clothing Exchange and Margate $3 Op Shop.
From there, April begins designing, tying the fabric in different ways using bands or string to create patterns, then dyeing it and “letting the colours do their thing.”
“That’s my favourite part – it’s always a bit unpredictable – because once it’s dyed, I rinse it, untie it, and see how it’s turned out,” she said.
April said that her clothing is also about energy and expression, with “each piece kind of reflecting a mood or feeling, and people can connect with that in their own way.”
As well as supporting local charities, April is currently using her sales to support veterinary work for her pet cavoodle.
“Lately, a lot of customers have been incredibly supportive on a personal level too, especially with my little dog being unwell,” she said.
She said that people who buy from her store are usually really conscious about their choices, “which makes it feel like we’re all contributing to something positive.”
