The Importance of Being Earnest

The latest production at Redcliffe Musical Theatre (RMT), The Importance of Being Earnest, is set to show just why theatre is not just a source of entertainment but also how, regardless of the century, we as humans crystallise our sense of truth.  

Since many of Oscar Wilde’s quotations are still used today, this classic work of literature, as it has been adapted into thespianism, illustrates our shared way of thinking in an immersive and vivacious performance format.  

According to Madeleine Johns, founding member and president of RMT, this play manifests a use of language that is unrivalled in literary works today, and audiences of the upcoming June shows can expect a “witty, wordy and thoroughly enjoyable night at the theatre” – with an anachronistic twist.  

“The play has been set in the 1920s rather than in the Victorian Era, as per the original script, and is performed in three acts as per its original format,” Ms Johns said.  

“This allows time to chat in the two short intervals or purchase a drink at the bar before resuming the story in the next act.” 

A Fresh Take on a Classic, with a Stellar Local Cast

For director Gary Farmer-Trickett, his experience means having “gone full circle,” as, having played the lead character twice, he “now has the pleasure of directing.” 

“I have tried to focus on the language to ensure Wilde’s message is clear but have added my own little touches to ensure it is well executed,” Mr Farmer-Trickett said.  

“Everyone in the play is hiding something or pretending to be someone else, and Wilde exposes how societal norms often force people to lead double lives.” 

Mr Farmer-Trickett said he was “very blessed to have a stellar cast and crew who make my job as director very easy,” with Ms Johns adding, “This cast is as good as you will see on a stage at QPAC.”  

According to Ms Johns, the best way to support the performing arts is to go to the theatre, which encourages the talent to keep performing.
