The Redcliffe Floral and Art Festival is set to return this month, with every bloom and brushstroke helping paint a thousand words.

Now in its ninth year, the free, three-day community event will embrace the theme A Picture Paints a Thousand Words, with festival coordinator Liz Peters saying the concept will introduce a more interactive experience for visitors.

“There will be post-it notes throughout the festival for visitors to express their ‘1000 words’ and placed on boards for all to view,” Liz said. “Also, a daily canvas, to create a communal ‘pointillism-style’ painting, with everything provided, is open to all to have a go.”

A major feature of this year’s program is the participation of five award-winning local artists, each sharing their personal journeys and perspectives on art.

Among them is Donna Hawkins, an experienced portrait painter and local art teacher, who was forced into early retirement due to chronic ill health. She credits art with saving her life and said she also “loves to share with others the healing power of art”.

Seascape semi-abstract mixed media artist Victoria Fairhurst Green will also feature, reflecting on the impact of art in her teaching practice, particularly with autistic students.

Art, Healing and Community Connection

“For my autistic students, art truly paints a thousand words,” Victoria said. “Their artwork reminds me that creativity is not limited to speech. It flows through colour, texture and joy. That is the language of art.”

Creative therapist and artist Kylie Davidson will bring her experience working with women and children who have survived domestic and family violence. She said that using art-making as a non-verbal language “supports participants to move at their own pace, fostering safety, self-expression and connection.”

Photographer and visual artist Sarah O’Neill will present her Pastel Coast series, created for the festival, which she said “reflects a lifelong pull towards the ocean” while exploring themes of memory, identity and place.

Also featured is Betrenia Eustace, a storyteller and artist, who combines her artwork into stories to “explain tough situations to children who are neurodivergent”. Her art and books will be on display.

The festival will also welcome Beachmere Art Society as a first-time exhibitor.

Visitors can expect a range of fresh floral displays, installations and tributes to Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso and other impressionist artists. Live entertainment will include performances by the Redcliffe Scottish Pipe Band and Multitude Choir.

“Come with friends for delicious Devonshire teas or homemade soups, take plants home for your garden and buy a lucky raffle ticket,” Liz said.

Raffles will be drawn and flowers sold on the Sunday.
