What began with a tarp at the Redcliffe Markets and a handful of didgeridoos has grown into one of the region’s most respected Aboriginal-owned cultural businesses.
This year, Dreamtime Kullilla-Art is celebrating 30 years of sharing authentic Aboriginal art, storytelling and cultural experiences with the community – a milestone built on resilience, self-belief and a deep commitment to culture.
Founded by Michael and Jo Connolly, the business traces its roots back to 1989 when the couple relocated from Charleville to Redcliffe to start a new chapter. After welcoming their young family, Michael began selling didgeridoos at local markets under the name Didgeridoos by Michael.
By 1996, the couple made the leap into full-time business and rebranded as Dreamtime Kullilla-Art.
“The early years were not easy,” Michael said.
“As an Aboriginal-owned business, we quickly realised we had to work twice as hard to be recognised as a legitimate and credible enterprise.”
For the first six to eight weeks at the markets, sales were nonexistent. But despite the setbacks, Michael and Jo continued to back themselves and their vision.
A Legacy of Culture and Community
“At its heart, Dreamtime Kullilla-Art was born from a need to share genuine Aboriginal stories, connection to Country, and cultural experiences that foster understanding, respect and meaningful engagement and authenticity in the arts,” Michael said.
Over three decades, the family-run business has weathered changing times, industry challenges and hard-earned business lessons – all without grants or external funding.
Today, Dreamtime Kullilla-Art has become far more than a retail gallery. It’s an immersive cultural experience that has earned widespread recognition, including Best of Queensland Status for 2026 for the third consecutive year, along with recognition as a Moreton Bay Champion.
One of the achievements the family is most proud of is Michael’s advocacy for authentic Aboriginal art and his involvement in campaigns to protect cultural integrity.
Now, the next generation is helping shape the future, with daughter Taylar-Jo joining the business team.
“She represents a new era for the business,” Michael said.
“Her approach is already helping us evolve, teaching us to work smarter rather than harder, while still staying true to who we are.”
