If your child has ever dreamed of flying a plane, Scouts Queensland is offering members the chance to get a taste of life in the cockpit at its upcoming Learn to Fly Day at Redcliffe Airport.
Run through Scouts Queensland’s Air Activities Program, the half-day experience gives participants the opportunity to fly in a light aircraft while learning more about aviation through hands-on activities on the ground.
For many participants, the experience is about far more than just taking a flight. Peter Gould, Assistant Chief Commissioner – Specialist Activities, said the program gives young people the chance to try something completely new while building confidence along the way.
“Scouts Queensland offers its youth members the opportunity to have a flight experience in a light aircraft as part of its Air Activities Program, as it may be the first time these young people have ever flown in a plane, particularly a light plane,” Mr Gould said.
“The youth members overcome the fear of trying something new and experience all the fun and excitement of taking off and seeing part of southeast Queensland through a completely different lens as they get to look out the window and listen to the pilot’s radio calls.”
Inspiring Future Aviators Through Hands-On Learning
Beyond the flight itself, participants can inspect aircraft up close, try PC-based flight simulators and take part in practical aerospace activities that support STEM learning.
Mr Gould said opportunities like this could spark lifelong passions.
“For some of our members, their flying experience with Scouts has led them to a lifelong interest and passion for flying,” he said. “Some have gone on to gain their recreational pilot’s licence and others even their commercial pilot’s licence.
“The captain of your next commercial flight may have been a Scout – and that’s where it all started!”
The program welcomes Venturer Scouts, Rover Scouts, Guides, Leaders and parents, making it a family-friendly day out. Parents are encouraged to bring lunch, picnic rugs, sunscreen and hats, with free gas barbecues and picnic facilities available on site.
