Colleagues and friends across the Redcliffe community radio industry are paying tribute to veteran broadcaster Ray Kerr, remembering his lasting impact at Bridge FM 99.7 following his passing on 4 May, aged 83.

Ray spent the past 13 years at the station, including the last seven as station manager, where he became a mentor to many. His 60-year broadcasting career included roles at more than 16 radio stations across Australia, from calling Aussie rules football to leading community stations.

Sales Manager Gavin Kett said he was honoured to “have known Ray for nearly 50 years and will always remember him as a strong, loving and community-focused radio legend.”

Bridge FM announcer Georgia described Ray as “the grandfather of our station” and “the pilot of our airwaves and the DJ of vinyls, cassettes, CDs, digital, and streaming.

“You were our rock and roll; the beat, the soul of 99.7FM,” Georgia said.

A Legacy of Mentorship and Community Impact

Announcer Sandii said Ray believed in her before she believed in herself.

“He trusted me with my own show and gave me the confidence to grow as an announcer,” she said. I’ll always be grateful for the faith and opportunities he gave me. Thank you, Ray. Your support made a lasting difference.”

Big Jon, announcer and MMGi board director, said he looked up to Ray.

“I will never forget his warm smile when he greeted you in the office, and he had this infectious cheeky laugh that no one could forget,” he said. “Thanks for everything you did in our amazing community.”

Ray also played a key role in Bridge FM’s partnership with Redcliffe Hospital. Sharyn Tidswell, Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital Manager, said Ray “believed deeply in the power of radio to bring people together.”

“Broadcasting live from Redcliffe Hospital on Giving Day is part of what he started, and something we will continue in his honour,” she said.
