After repairs completed by a generous friend, a local street library has been restored and is ready to serve readers.

Located outside 18 Cutts Street in Margate, Elaine Simpson’s beautifully floral-decorated enclosure resembles a tiny cottage.

Ms Simpson said a generous representative of The Redcliffe Men’s Shed originally constructed her library design, with the artistic flourishes coming from a “talented artist neighbour”.

“I first got the idea in 2021 seeing the delightful library in Arthur Street and with (everyone) still reeling from COVID, it seemed like a good community project,” she said.

Since then, major parts of the library had succumbed to dry rot, with Ms Simpson having to take the structure down for several weeks in order for repairs to be completed.

A Community Book-Sharing Initiative

With the street library now functional, Ms Simpson is especially loving seeing “children going through the books before carefully making their selection.”

The Margate Street Library runs not-for-profit, with Ms Simpson often purchasing books from op shops or benefiting from donations.

People are invited to “bring a book and take a book” to keep supplies thriving.
