History and entertainment will collide at a very special meet and greet for the beloved Pierre’s Mill restaurant and cafe.

Taking place at the Redcliffe Museum this month, locals will have the chance to meet anthropologist Nonja Peters and other special guests while learning about the history of Dutch mercantilism, with a special focus on Pierre’s Mill.

Nonja said the event would be informative, emotive and interactive.

“We hope to capture the public’s imagination by creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages people to share their experiences of Pierre’s Mill café, both as staff members and members of the public that loved the diverse food and atmosphere,” she said.

“We also look forward to hearing their stories of migration, whether as a child or an adult. We anticipate hearing humorous, romantic, and even awkward anecdotes.

“We also hope many people will attend and bring memorabilia to evoke memories of the café and the drive-in theatre – where much would have been happening as well as the film.”

Pierre’s Mill was a cornerstone of local life at Kippa-Ring for 20 years between 1969 and 1985, located right beside the old drive-in theatre.

A Documentary and a Passion Project

A highlight of the event will be the screening of the documentary titled Westlanders in Australia, produced by filmmaker, Heleen van Berkel, which follows the emigration story of Henk and Wil, whose father owned Pierre’s Mill.

When asked how Nonja became part of this passion project, she said, “I was approached by Heleen, the filmmaker, in 2023.

“Since 2004, I have been engaged in projects related to Dutch Australian shared heritage.

“I have built a strong network in the Netherlands within academia and cultural organisations (and) Heleen received my name as a potential advisor for her project.

“My motto is to bridge the gap between academia and the public by presenting my research in an engaging audio-visual format.

“It brings me great joy when people approach me to share their previously unexpressed feelings, especially about their experiences with their grandchildren.”

The event is free, but bookings are essential.
